This musical piece was composed by
Franz Joseph Haydn (HI-den) 210 years
ago. At that time, audiences expected
music to be polite, refined, and predictable.
They followed regular patterns, which
are easy to determine in advance.
Haydn felt that if his music was
too polite and predictable, his audiences
might get bored. So, he included musical
surprises to wake up the audience!
Listen to an excerpt from Symphony
No. 94 by Franz Joseph Haydn and imagine
you are a member of a 1792 audience.
Sit straight in your chair and pretend
that you are a refined listener of
the 18th century. When the music begins,
pretend that you become very sleepy,
and each time you hear a musical surprise,
you wake up! Count how many times
the music wakes you up.
How many "surprises" are
there in the music you heard?
