Overview

Enter the complex and lyrical world of Stephen Sondheim, one of the most celebrated composers of the American musical theater.

Suggested Use

Designed for students in grades 9-12, this site examines Sondheim within the historical context of musical theatre, as a voice of cultural change, and as an innovator in structural design. Ideally, Celebrating Sondheim should be used in conjunction with a viewing of one or more of the following works, each selected for their appropriateness for high school students: Sweeney Todd; Sunday in the Park with George; Merrily We Roll Along; and Into the Woods, Jr. To fully appreciate Sondheim's place in the history of musical theater, you should use the comprehensive glossary of terms, Internet-based timeline, and accompanying lessons plans in conjunction with an exploration of the site.

Technical Requirements

This site features a selection of show posters specially sized for 8 1/2 x 11 paper; users will need the Acrobat Reader to download the PDFs. Posters are best printed using laser or other advanced color printers.
