Unit Overview:

In this unit, students explore how illustrations contribute to the telling of a story, as well as the techniques that illustrators use to tell a story. Students learn that illustrations can help them to understand the elements of the story, including the characters, setting and plot, and can also help them to decipher unknown words. A variety of activities engage students in both “reading” and creating illustrations, sequencing the events of a story, and retelling stories. Suggestions for independent literacy-building activities are also included.
